Know the Surroundings

The “Baix Empordà”

One of the many charms of the Baix Empordà is its privileged location between the sea and the mountains. A short distance from France, with the sea to the east and the Pyrenees to the north, less than an hour from the historic city of Girona and the Garrotxa volcanic area, and a hundred kilometres from the Olympic city of Barcelona, the Baix Empordà is the ideal starting point for making one- or two-day outings to nearby but very different places like the Dalí Museum in Figueres, the ruins of Empúries or the Jewish Quarter of Girona.

Illes Medes

No visit to the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí – L’Estartit is complete if it does not include the Medes Islands. This is a protected maritime-terrestrial zone with great biological diversity. It is made up of two small islands and a group of small islets and reefs. The submerged area is a protected zone that contains a number of very complex ecosystems, making it an ideal spot for diving.

The town of Pals has a fascinating medieval nucleus set on a hill, conserving the typical structure and layout of the period, with narrow alleyways, towers and buildings that make it a very interesting visit.

The municipality of Forallac is made up of a number of villages situated close to each other. Of special interest is the extremely interesting medieval town of Peratallada, with its layout of narrow, winding, cobblestoned alleys which was once closed in by a complex system of walls. The castle keep is also very interesting.

Torroella de Montgrí

Montgrí Castle is today the symbol of Torroella de Montgrí. The uncompleted fortress was built between 1294 and 1301 to flaunt the superiority of King Jaume II over the local Counts of Empúries, and affords excellent views of the spectacular surrounding landscape. From the top of one of its towers there is a 360º panoramic view of the whole Empordà area. By looking northwards and turning slowly in an anti-clockwise direction you will see the Bay of Roses, Empúries, Canigó Massif, the Pyrenees, Montseny Massif, the Gavarres Mountains, the Baix Ter and L’Estartit Bay with the Medes Islands.

It’s a town with personality, and is an ideal place to spend an enjoyable stay at any time of the year. Visitors can picture the different periods of history that have left their mark on the town from architectural vestiges that make us travel back through time in the blink of an eye.
The main streets of Torroella all converge on Plaça de la Vila, the lively Monday morning marketplace, the departure point for street parades announcing forthcoming entertainment, and an ideal stage for traditional sardana dancing.

Do not miss the bays and shore walks around the town of Begur. The sheer cliffs and sheltered coves are the origin of the name Costa Brava, the ‘wild’ or ‘rugged’ coast. Coves like Sa Riera, Sa Tuna and Aiguablava are some examples that we warmly recommend you visit.

Do not miss the bays that dot the coast around Palafrugell. Calella, once a small fishing village, is one of the most attractive points on the Costa Brava. The shore walk that connects this bay with Llafranc is very beautiful, skirting the coastline just a few metres from the sea.

The full essence of a Catalan fishing village from the past, stroll around the wonderfully preserved streets of the dreamy, bohemian town of Cadaqués with its whitewashed houses, stone streets, delightful views, the Santa Maria Church. A favourite spot for artists, such as: Salvador Dalí, Picasso, Marcel Duchamp to name but a few. Relax as you watch the world go by at one of the, many, seafront Cafeteria’s or Restaurants. A perfect place to enjoy a few tasty “Tapas”.

Another important place is Salvador Dali’s house-museum in Portlligat.
Salvador Dali’s house-museum is a must-see as we can imagine the painter’s lifestyle watching his eclectic collection of possessions..

Nautilus / Corsario Negro

The “Nautilus”, is a large modern ship with windows in its keel that look out on to the underwater world of the Medes Islands. Nominated “Marine reserve” in 1983 and now one of the most important in Europe, has a vast variety of marine flora and fauna. Various tours depart every hour from l’Estartit Harbour.
“Corsari Negre” a chance to experience sailing on a wooden, hand crafted pirate ship. Discover the rugged coast line that gives the “Costa Brava” its name, and enjoy a swim in one of the many secluded and picturesque bays. Two routes to choose from, morning and afternoon.

La Bisbal

The capital of the district, La Bisbal d’Empordà, is well-known as the capital of pottery. The street called Carrer de l’Aigüeta is lined with shops selling the typical pottery of the town. In La Bisbal you will also find the pottery factories and the Terracotta Museum, dedicated to the pottery-making tradition in the area.

Sant Feliu de Guíxols

Sant Feliu de Guíxols is notable for its Benedictine monastery, once one of the most important and powerful, of which there remains an interesting group of Romanesque buildings, formed by two towers and the Porta Ferrada (10th C.), one of the most distinctive constructions of the town, whose irregular forms and dimensions make up a very particular and attractive sight.

Lloret & Tossa de Mar

Spend the morning in Lloret de Mar a bustling tourist town, a chance to do your souvenir shopping, enjoy a cream cake and a “café con leche” or a cool “San Miguel” & “Tapas” at one of the many seafront Bar’s & Cafeterias or simply just relax on the beach that has a selection of beach activities available. The afternoon is spent in Tossa de Mar, a very well preserved fortified medieval fishing village, with narrow streets, stone houses, tempting craft shops and stylish boutiques. Nice sea-front Restaurants with reasonably priced Daily Menu’s. Comfortable air-conditioned coach with a travel assistant.
Time to get your camera’s out!
